  Town Services

Water and Sewer
Public water is supplied by a combination of water from the Vly Creek Reservoir and wells. It is delivered through an extensive system of distribution mains, remote automated pumping stations and water storage tanks. All facilities are linked to central IBM computer system in the main control room at the Water Purification Plant. This constantly monitors flow rates and water throughout the Town.

The Sewer District operates a modern sewage treatment plant located in the hamlet of Cedar Hill and a system of over 152 miles of collector sewers, trunk mains and force mains. All of the major facilities were designed on the basis of a Town-wide sewerage study so that hydraulic capacity exists to serve the entire town.

Highway
The Town's Highway Department is responsible for the upkeep and maintenance of over 160 miles of streets and highways. In addition to its efficient snow removal and aggressive paving program, the Highway Department provides other seasonal programs such as spring cleanup, summer yard waste pickup and fall leaf pickup.

Highway personnel are also responsible for the upkeep of 32 miles of sidewalks, as well as the maintenance of over 180 vehicles and equipment owned by the various Town departments. The Highway Department's modern garage, storage, and office facilities are located on Elm Avenue East in Selkirk.

Refuse and Recycling
The Town owns and operates a transfer station and construction and demolition landfill on Rupert Road in South Bethlehem where Town residents may dispose of their trash and recyclables. Fees are charged at the gate and a permit (obtained at Town Hall, the Town park or the Highway Garage) is required for entry. The Rupert Road facility is open Monday through Saturday, 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.

Residents may choose to contract with one of several private collectors for weekly trash pickup. The Town's recycling law requires that newspapers, cardboard, magazines, office paper, metal cans, glass and plastic bottles be separated from other trash. For further information contact the Recycling Coordinator at 767-9718 between 8:00 a.m. and noon.
