Mad Dog Bicycles
Mad Dog Bicycles is a local bike shop located in Delmar. It started as a small hobby back in 1991 when owner Matt Devlin retrieved his old 1971 Schwinn Collegiate 5-speed that was tucked away in his parents’ basement. At the time Matt was working for a bike shop in the Boston area, and he was able to restore his Schwinn to almost like-new condition!
He started going to bicycle swap meets where he met fellow enthusiasts and began to develop a network of contacts to buy, sell and trade bike parts with. Matt started fixing up old bicycles that still had some life left in them – they just needed his TLC. His interests gravitated towards older Schwinn bikes from his childhood years, the 1960’s - 1970’s, including models like Stingrays, Krates, Manta Rays, Fastbacks, Corvettes, and Jaguars.
By 1993 he had moved back to Delmar, and he started the annual all-weekend Bicycle Garage Sale. The garage sale lasted for 13 years, and with each passing year it got bigger and bigger. Bike enthusiasts were selling, trading and buying used bicycles all weekend, and Matt realized he had discovered a niche in Delmar for repairing and selling used bikes.
Opportunity came knocking in 2005 when Matt had the chance to open a retail bike shop in the former location of Eagles Nest Bike Shop. Initially he just sold used bikes, but Matt had a hard time keeping enough supply in stock to last the season. He eventually started offering new bikes, and after thorough research he chose Jamis Bicycles. The Jamis brand offers a full line of high quality road bicycles, comfort bicycles, mountain bicycles and youth models at reasonable prices.
Matt still keeps some used bikes on hand, and his collection of vintage Schwinns is always evolving. He still enjoys restoration work, so keep Mad Dog Bicycles in mind if you are looking to detail, repair or sell your vintage bicycle. Restoration work is typically performed off-season during late fall and winter.
